In looking through my reference photos, i found one i hadn't noticed before:

Image

Because of that photo, i decided to make a few additions. I cut the cooler vent out, and made a shroud for it.. And i decided the guard bars needed to be fixed. Unfortunately i had JUST got done soldering in the standard 4 bars into place when i realized this.. But thanks to solder it was easy to pull them out and put in the new ones.

You can see behind where the holes are normally cut out for the 4 guard bar version.. in looking at the photos, Moyer's are further forward then a Rocket's are.. so i soldered the assembly together and filled the holes.. You won't see the join when it's painted.

Image

....actually did it two times.. I found another reference image and saw that the bars are angled more, the base plate was more triangular.. so i scratched the version below and did it again.. the version on top looks much closer to the real car's configuration. It's not a perfect match, but it's closer then it originally was. My shroud design has to go as far back as it does because it covers up the dash board panel when is screwed in a specific place in the cockpit. there's no wiggle room there so i have to split the difference.

THUMBS UP!!! I like how each one is just a little different!!

I'd like to see one that is raw brass.......that would be kind of cool!! (I still want my bloomquist, not changing my order  )

One of these days, I'd like to do something just like that actually! What i want to do is have the car split down the middle, half painted and decalled just like normal.. the other half still raw brass and plastic.. I think it would look really cool.. but would be quite a challenge!

Maybe someday for a display car when i take the cars on 'tour' :)

I like it! Again, thanks for the extra time to add car specific details. I appreciate that effort very much.

I've been searching for more shots of this car all over the internet to see if I can locate a cockpit photo for Christina's question about it's color. I'm thinking it's red with the standard diamond plate floor and a red seat, but I'm still looking. There were some awesome photos of this car as he received it back in late June of 2007 on a forum website somewhere, but I can't seem to locate which site had them. I think it's long gone.

Awesome update, Mike....

Sure thing.. I like adding the little details too.. as long as something is within reason, i'll definitely add it. I have a 'base' designed that will fit most cars, and since i have all the artwork for the design i can wander off the base a little in places to make things custom for a certain car...

I can only go so far mind you.. there are some things that can't be changed, but there is some wiggle room in places for changes.

I'm trying to think how to do the red seat accurately. His seat likely has a red cover on it.. only problem is the seat design i use is of a lightweight version with no cover.. only the pads for comfort.

I do have some nascar seats from old model kits i can use, that could be painted red in the front, silver in the back, and it should look pretty accurate.

Mike,

You're right, it's a red cover over an aluminum seat with the ButlerBuilt logo on the cover right at head level.

Here's some photo's of the seat itself and the logo on the seat.

I would like to have you use your lightweight version, painted red on the front to simulate the cover and the rest silver. If you can think of a way to decal the logo on it, that would be a cool touch. If the Nascar seats will be closer to what this looks like, by all means use one.

Thanks,

Scott

I stopped by the craft store on the way home from work last night, and picked up a few things i'm going to try. Basically i'm going to try to make a realistic cover to go over the lightweight seat frame.. it's really the only way to make it truly realistic.

I can't promise anything, but i'm going to give it a shot.

I'm going to do some painting today.. get your frame and body panels painted and ready to go.

I think it'll turn out great. I didn't have enough of the paint to spray the chassis when i wanted to, but ordered some more last week.. I hope it will arrive late this week early next.

I also ordered some photoetched seatbelt kits for the cars.. since about the only thing the cockpits were missing was some good looking seatbelts.

The deck and cockpit panels are all painted.. and thankfully they turned out great! It's always a little scary spraying red after white, since any overspray onto the white pretty much means it's back in the acetone for a bath and you start over.

A neat little detail that may not be evident in other photos, is that i've taken to painting the 'deck vanes' correctly. As you may know Tim (since you've built the real cars), when you build the deck, the edges are double folded, so you get the deck color showing underneath.

It's shown in the photo here:

Image

The Moyer deck has this feature (as does the Carrier Jr. one if you look close at the photos).

The Masterpiece Series really is meant for the most 'Woah, it has that too' moments i can possibly create!

I'm off my 'day job' the next four days, so i look forward to a lot of progress on the cars.

I'll keep you all posted, and appreciate you all visiting and posting.

Oh, one thing i forgot to mention is i did some playing with the seat for the Moyer car.. and I decided that the NASCAR seat was more accurate, and just made some modifications to it.

The one on the left, i was playing with some cover material, and it just didn't work. I do like the seatbelt material i found though.. it's technically out of scale but i like seeing the weave. I'll try to add some SIMPSON decals to them when i receive the seatbelt photoetch kits.

Image

I removed part of the top of the seat, cut out the slot where the seatbelts come through, and made it more like a dirt style seat.. it's very close to a Butlerbilt seat in design.. I'll add the decal then paint the whole thing with flat clear to make it look realistic.

Mike,

These little details are everything. Add them up and it makes the replica a Masterpiece, lol.

The paint detail on the decking is very subtle, but adds a ton to the replica especially if I open it up to display it.

The seat looks perfect. Thank you for adding this to the replica. I know you were not planning to do that.

I'm sure glad you like to do this work! Please keep the photos coming.

Thanks,

Scott

I'm glad you like em' Scott.. I'll definitely try to add what little things i can to every Masterpiece Car, as long as it's within my capabilities, and within reason.

Today was nicely productive, but the heat killed me.. it topped 105 here today, and it just made painting impossible until just now when it's cooled down.

I went out earlier to do some priming of some parts, and the primer was dry before it hit the parts it was so hot. Luckily i was just priming.. so it's an easy task of sanding things smooth.

The spray booth should be done next week which will be GREAT! i'll be able to have a controlled environment again to paint in.

My goal now is to get the frames painted, deck, and cockpits installed on all 3 cars by Sunday. It all depends on when the paint comes for the Moyer frame, but i'll do all i can in the meantime.

Thanks again!

- Michael

I'm excited that you keep us up to date on what's going on and the progress......the Moyer or Wallace car isn't even mine, and I love watching the progress......keep it up all the way thru the Bloomer cars!! I assume Highplainsdrifter is getting the Moyer car, he should be very proud!!

Thanks again for all the work AND keeping us up to date!!

Success!

It was a long haul getting here, but late tonight, I finally got what I was after on the Moyer frame.

I should have learned by now to stop playing with Model Paints, and stick with automotive urethane's, but I was stuck on a frame i'd painted years ago using some Boyds colors, and wasted a lot of time ordering and messing with them.

Today I got some House of Kolor Purple Kandy Koncentrate. You mix it in with a two-part urethane clear coat. I sprayed it over a shiny silver undercoat i'd already laid down, and the color turned out just how i'd wanted.

The paint is going to cure overnight in my spray booth to keep away from dust, but i'll take photos tomorrow if i get a chance.

The color came out a nice anodized purpley-pinkish, that very closely matches the real car's color.

I barely used any of the Kandy Koncentrate, and now have a lifetime supply of "Moyer Purple". It stores well, and i'll definitely use it in the future when I do some modern Mud Fleas.

This Moyer car also appears to share the same chassis color, and may appear as a Mud Flea sometime down the road.

Well, it's late, i'm going to call it a night.
